Walgreens - Celebrates Black Excellence in Pharmacy!
|
Posted By: S. Moore on April 01, 2024 In honor of Black History Month, Walgreens proudly hosted a "Dose of Culture" panel titled "Elevating Careers with Black Pharmacists" on February 22nd, 2024. The event served as a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of Black pharmacists in the industry. Moderated by Walgreens' Chief Pharmacy Officer, Rick Gates, the panel featured four exceptional pharmacists: Dr. Damika Walker, Dr. Triana Watkins, Dr. Jami Perkins, and Dr. Jill Odia. These esteemed professionals shared their inspiring journeys, insights, and experiences, shedding light on the vital role of Black pharmacists in advancing health equity and social justice. Dr. Watkins, a specialty pharmacist based in Jacksonville, Florida, recounted her early inspiration working at Eckerd Drugstore, where she witnessed firsthand the impact of a compassionate pharmacist on patient care. Similarly, Dr. Odia's admiration for her older sister, a pharmacist, ignited her passion for the profession, driving her to serve her community for over 20 years at Walgreens. The panelists also highlighted Walgreens' commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, with Dr. Perkins emphasizing the importance of cultural awareness in building trust and rapport with patients of diverse backgrounds. Beyond their professional roles, Dr. Walker and Dr. Watkins shared their involvement in community initiatives, such as Immunize DC and Sister Strut, demonstrating their dedication to improving healthcare access and education. The Sister Strut 3K walk celebrated and empowered women battling breast cancer, particularly African-American women. This impactful event raised awareness of the disease and offered a haven for survivors. A special lounge provided immunizations, mini makeovers from beauty consultants, and a chance for pampering. Local pharmacists were also present, sharing valuable information about community resources. Complementing Sister Strut's focus on health awareness, ImmunizeDC champions comprehensive vaccination for everyone in D.C. This vital coalition unites the community and healthcare providers to ensure complete immunization rates for all ages. Their mission? Saving lives, boosting wellness, and building a healthier future for the District of Columbia. The event highlighted Walgreens' ongoing efforts to empower pharmacists and create a more inclusive healthcare environment. As Dr. Watkins eloquently said, "There is room for us everywhere, and I think we need to be represented at every table." Walgreens remains committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. Their efforts are creating a more inclusive future in pharmacy, attracting diverse talent, and better serving their communities.
