DEBUT JERSEYS REVEALED BY FIRST HBCU HOCKEY TEAM

This initiative, developed in collaboration with the NHL and NHLPA, marks TSU as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to introduce collegiate ice hockey. The culmination of years of planning, the team proudly unveiled their new jerseys, featuring a striking royal blue design with red and white stripes on the sleeves and bottom. The jersey is adorned with a tiger face on the front and 'TSU' displayed prominently on each arm. Leading the charge is Coach Duante’ Abercrombie, appointed to helm the program following TSU's 2023 announcement of their plans to establish the HBCU hockey program. Abercrombie, who brings a robust coaching background that includes stints at Stevenson University, the Washington Little Capitals, and roles with NHL teams such as the San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Arizona Coyotes, brings a wealth of experience to the role. In a statement, Abercrombie expressed his enthusiasm, envisioning TSU not only as a force on the ice but also as a program that shapes student-athletes into global leaders. He is currently on a recruitment tour, actively seeking talent to join the team. His itinerary includes stops at key events like the annual Black Hockey Summit in Toronto, hosted by Hockey Equality, a nonprofit organization spearheaded by retired NHL forward Anthony Stewart. The introduction of the TSU hockey program represents a groundbreaking opportunity to expand diversity within collegiate hockey and broaden opportunities for student-athletes interested in the sport. As TSU prepares for its inaugural season wearing these distinctive jerseys, the university looks forward to making a lasting impact both on and off the ice.
