Meet Dr. Min Zhang: A Dedicated HBCU Educator
|
Posted By: Christopher Rivera on July 30, 2024 Educators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) play a crucial role in shaping the future of students and communities. Whether they are teaching, mentoring, or contributing to the academic environment, their dedication is invaluable. Today we introduce you to a dedicated HBCU educator, Dr. Min Zhang. In January 2021, she joined Coppin State University (CSU). She received tenure in 2023, and she is now a rising scholar-leader, sitting on various campus-wide committees like the Coppin Inclusive Community Committee and the Advisory Council of International Programs. Dr. Min Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Forensic Investigation and the Chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice Department at CSU, an urban, anchor institution in West Baltimore that is part of the University System of Maryland. CSU has a rich history of producing forensic investigation and criminal justice professionals who make significant contributions to the entire nation’s criminal justice system. In teaching forensic science, Dr. Zhang emphasizes the importance of scientific methods, evidence collection, analysis techniques, and the application of scientific principles in criminal investigations. As the field requires a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills, Dr. Zhang utilizes her strong educational background in biology, medicine, and forensic science; she also integrates her rich practice and research experiences in the forensic field to deliver CSU Forensic and Criminal Justice students the best educational opportunities. In addition to conducting traditional lectures in classrooms and hands-on laboratory experiments, Dr. Zhang brings students to the field to learn real-world forensic investigations when teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses. At CSU, you often see Dr. Zhang’s outdoor projects attended by many students and a diverse audience population. In Baltimore City, you may encounter her teaching students a real investigation class collaborating with law enforcement instructors. Outside her class, Dr. Zhang introduces students to internships and employment opportunities; because she understands that enhancing career readiness at HBCUs is extremely important, she empowers students through her mentorship and tutelage to achieve their career aspirations and to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Moreover, Dr. Zhang takes her research students to academic conferences to help them immerse themselves in a rich research environment at the national level. Because of her teaching excellence, Dr. Zhang received the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), junior faculty teaching award in 2023; this teaching honor comes from an international association established in 1963 to foster professional and scholarly activities in the field. She also received the CSU teaching award in the same year. As an educator, Dr. Zhang not only imparts knowledge, but she also inspires and guides students as they develop their skills and pursue careers in forensic science and criminal justice. Her dedication contributes to the academic excellence and professional success of her students, making a lasting impact on their lives and the communities they serve. photo: Dr. Zhang at her students Nydiera Vaughan and Morgan Pettus’s ACJS presentation at the National Habor, 2023.
