DIVERSITY IN GYMNASTICS: HBCU CAMPUS SUMMER CAMPS SHAPING THE FUTURE

Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 19, 2024 Brown Girls Do Gymnastics (BGDG) is actively promoting diversity within gymnastics through its annual summer camps hosted at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Founded by Coach Derrin Moore, BGDG seeks to empower Black and Brown girls in gymnastics and circus arts while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment often lacking in mainstream gymnastics. The organization's flagship program, Camp Isla, is held at HBCU campuses such as North Carolina A&T and Wilberforce University. Here, young gymnasts receive intensive training and participate in discussions addressing the unique challenges and experiences faced by girls of color in the sport. Topics such as hair care, cultural representation, and the underrepresentation of Black coaches and leaders are openly discussed, providing a safe space for these girls to excel without judgment. BGDG's impact extends beyond the camps. Through partnerships with HBCUs, BGDG has been instrumental in establishing and revitalizing gymnastics programs at institutions like Fisk University and Talladega College. These programs provide opportunities for talented Black gymnasts who may not have considered HBCUs due to limited athletic options. Despite financial challenges, particularly at Talladega College where the gymnastics program faces potential closure, BGDG continues to advocate for representation and support for Black athletes in gymnastics. The success stories from BGDG's initiatives are inspirational. For instance, Morgan Price from Fisk University made history as the first gymnast from an HBCU to win a collegiate national title. Such achievements underscore the talent and potential within these communities, encouraging more young athletes to pursue their gymnastics aspirations at HBCUs. Looking ahead, BGDG aims to expand its reach and impact by cultivating a pipeline of Black gymnasts and coaches. By nurturing a sense of belonging and opportunity at HBCUs, BGDG hopes to diversify the sport and empower future generations of Black athletes to excel both on and off the gymnastics mat.
