THE ROLE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTERS IN KAMALA HARRIS'S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 26, 2024 On July 21, 2024, a significant wave of support for Kamala Harris emerged from 44,000 Black women who rallied online under the hashtag #WinWithBlackWomen, raising over $1.5 million in just three hours. The following day, 53,000 Black men, organized as #WinWithBlackMen, matched this momentum by raising $1.3 million for Harris. Social media was abuzz with enthusiasm from African Americans, many of whom were affiliated with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) or Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs). Participants, including Charisse M. Staine and Nikita Y. Harris, expressed their empowerment and excitement from these grassroots efforts, reflecting a diverse cross-section of Black professionals and activists. Supporters like Louis Bolling and Wayne Wormley compared the energy of these mobilizations to historical events like the Million Man March. Meanwhile, figures such as Linda Oubre and Kijua Sanders-McMurtry highlighted the significance of Harris's candidacy for breaking barriers and advancing social justice. Despite overwhelming support, some individuals like Darris Thomas and Sequoia Riley voiced concerns about Harris’s past and current policy positions. Nevertheless, many emphasized the importance of supporting Harris to counter the threat posed by her opponents, reflecting a broader commitment to progressive change and inclusive leadership. Overall, the unified efforts and substantial financial backing from these communities underscore their influence and dedication to shaping the future of American politics.
