INTERNATIONAL BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL TO FEATURE N.C. A&T'S PRODUCTION OF AUGUST WILSON’S ‘SEVEN GUITARS’

INTERNATIONAL BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL TO FEATURE N.C. A&T
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 31, 2024

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Theatre Arts Program will present August Wilson’s acclaimed play, Seven Guitars, at the International Black Theatre Festival (IBTF) on July 30 and 31, 2024. This poignant drama, set in the summer of 1948 in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, delves into the Black experience in post-war America through the lens of jazz and blues music. The play centers on a group of friends who gather to reminisce and reflect after the death of their friend, a promising blues musician. As they mourn, a profound mystery unfolds, revealing deep truths about the pursuit of dreams and the moral complexities of their lives.

The IBTF, formerly known as the National Black Theatre Festival, is a major cultural event running from July 29 to August 3 in Winston-Salem.

The festival features over 120 theatrical performances and a variety of supplementary activities, including theatre workshops, a film festival, a midnight poetry slam, an International Vendors Market, and a celebrity gala. It celebrates the richness and diversity of the arts, with ticket prices ranging from $10 to $60.

The production of Seven Guitars by N.C. A&T is part of the IBTF Collegiate Fringe category. Developed during a directing class, this performance employs minimal scenic elements and costumes to emphasize the drama’s emotional depth. Directed by Autumn Carter, a junior theatre arts major at A&T, the production offers students an opportunity to showcase their talents and engage with prominent figures in the film and theatre industries. This festival appearance highlights the students’ skills and provides a platform for networking and gaining exposure in one of the country’s largest theatre festivals.
