Posted By: Rosalee Martin on June 16, 2025 Dr. Rosalee Martin is announcing the publication of her book, Their Stories, Our Stories: Four Presidents of Huston-Tillotson University (2025), published by Texas Tech University Press. Dr. Rosalee Martin taught at HT 50 years, longer than any other professor. HT is the oldest university in Austin, now noted as the best private HBCU in Texas. The book covers 57 of HT's 150 years under the umbrella of four presidents, Drs. King, McMillan, Earvin and Burnette, 1965-2022. Martin uses surveys, interviews, existing documents including newspapers, magazines, articles and web surveys to document HT’s presidents, faculty, alumni and students’ challenges and successes. She highlights the continuing value of HT as a vibrant HBCU, contributing to educational, social and cultural leadership in Austin, Texas, USA and the world. The final chapter, HBCUs Still Needed, is a must read. Rather than losing their relevance, HBCUs are stretching their wings to encompass larger and more diverse student populations. The resilience of HBCUs can be seen in their individual and collective histories as is the case of HT. The book examines the role of external factors that deeply influences the success of HBCUs regardless of the leadership skills of presidents.
