PLC Detroit Partners with Lace Up Detroit for Sneaker Drive: Providing Laces for Change

PLC Detroit Partners with Lace Up Detroit for Sneaker Drive: Providing Laces for Change
Posted By: P C on November 20, 2025

In an inspiring display of community spirit and collaboration, PLC Detroit, the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation dedicated to design, has teamed up with Lace Up Detroit to launch the "Providing Laces for Change" sneaker drive throughout the month of November. This initiative seeks to collect over 100 pairs of new sneakers for families in need throughout Detroit.

At the heart of this initiative is Brock Mullen, PLC’s Program Manager for Industry Credentials Education. Driven by a passion for philanthropy and a commitment to community upliftment, Mullen emphasizes that this sneaker drive is about more than just footwear. “We're not just about creating sneakers; we're committed to uplifting our community,” he explains. “This sneaker drive is an opportunity to provide essential support and inspire hope for those in need. I encourage everyone to join us in making a meaningful impact.”

The call to action is clear: the community is invited to donate new sneakers at partner retailers, including Foot Locker, Social Status, Two|18, and Xhibition. Each retail partner will serve as a designated collection point, creating accessible avenues for individuals to contribute.

The importance of this sneaker drive extends beyond simply providing shoes. Christine Krathwohl from Lace Up Detroit notes the transformative effects of their previous initiatives. “Over the past few years, our Lace Up Detroit sneaker and fundraising drives have made a meaningful impact across the city, providing thousands of new shoes to children and families who need them most,” she shares. The drives not only fulfill a necessity but also help boost children’s confidence and school attendance, alleviating financial pressure on families in the process.

This year’s collaboration with PLC Detroit represents an exciting opportunity to amplify these efforts. Lindsey Lawson from Lace Up Detroit expresses her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Partnering with PLC Detroit will allow us to take that impact even further. Their strong connection to education, design, and community engagement aligns perfectly with our mission.

Together, we can expand access, raise awareness, and inspire more young people, especially those in under-resourced neighborhoods, to feel supported and seen.”

This collaboration embodies a commitment to community solidarity. By rallying support for families in need, participants in the sneaker drive help cultivate a sense of hope and pride among those who may be struggling. The drive serves as a reminder that collective action can lead to meaningful change.

PLC Detroit stands as a leader for creativity and professional development in the education and design industry. The college is dedicated to forging new pathways for aspiring creatives, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive landscape. By focusing on unconventional educational experiences and innovative product creation, PLC Detroit is preparing a diverse talent pool for the future.

Lace Up Detroit, founded in 2015 by a group of compassionate women, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on providing new shoes and boots to underserved children and women in the Detroit metropolitan area. With over 16,000 pairs of shoes donated, the organization has made a substantial impact on the lives of many families, reinforcing the message that new shoes can promote joy, dignity, and confidence.
The sneaker drive runs throughout November, and community members are encouraged to take part by donating new sneakers at any of the participating retailers. Whether it’s a pair of athletic shoes for a child or a comfortable pair of sneakers for an adult, every donation counts and will make a significant difference for families in need.

The partnership between PLC Detroit and Lace Up Detroit for the "Providing Laces for Change" sneaker drive exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing pressing social issues. By coming together to support families in the Detroit area, they are not only providing essential resources but also advancing a culture of hope and community support.

Join PLC Detroit and Lace Up Detroit in making a difference. As Brock Mullen aptly puts it, this initiative is about “uplifting our community” and inspiring change, one pair of sneakers at a time.
