Introducing 1868 Legacy

Introducing 1868 Legacy
Posted By: Sherry Snipes on January 28, 2026

I’m excited to introduce 1868 Legacy, a heritage-inspired lifestyle brand rooted in one of the most pivotal years in American history—1868.

The year represents two powerful milestones that continue to shape our lives today: the ratification of the 14th Amendment, which redefined citizenship and equal protection under the law, and the founding of Hampton University, an institution created to educate, empower, and develop leaders at a time when opportunity was deeply unequal.

Although these two events are often discussed together, they emerged from very different contexts and carry distinct legacies. One reflects constitutional change; the other represents education, self-determination, and the long tradition of HBCUs as engines of leadership and excellence.

1868 Legacy was created to honor both—without collapsing their meaning—by acknowledging the power of distinction.

“1868 represents more than a year—it represents parallel paths of progress. One rooted in law, the other in education. 1868 Legacy is my way of honoring both histories while inviting us to think more deeply about how legacy is built, worn, and passed forward.”
— Founder, 1868 Legacy

The 1868 Legacy collection is thoughtfully designed to be timeless, elevated, and intentional—pieces that carry story, pride, and purpose. This is not just apparel; it is an expression of heritage and a conversation starter about where we’ve been and where we are going.

I invite the HBCU Connect community to explore the 1868 Legacy collection, engage with the history behind it, and join me in celebrating legacy, education, and excellence.
