$810K in Funding Boosts Safety, Scholarships at Historic Morris Brown College
Posted By: Will Moss on January 29, 2026

Atlanta, GA – Morris Brown College, the historic Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Atlanta, has secured over $810,000 in critical funding to enhance campus security, expand scholarship opportunities, and support the institution's ongoing revival.

The funding, which includes a $700,000 federal grant, a $60,000 donation from the Sixth District of the AME Church, and a $50,000 gift from Atlanta rapper T.I., will have a significant impact on the college's ability to provide a safe and supportive environment for its students, faculty, and staff.

Key Takeaway: This multifaceted investment in Morris Brown College demonstrates a growing commitment from the government, faith-based organizations, and community leaders to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of this important HBCU.

The $700,000 federal grant, secured through the efforts of U.S. Representative Nikema Williams (GA-05), will enable Morris Brown to develop comprehensive emergency response plans, enhance safety awareness, upgrade critical communications and technology, conduct risk assessments, and hire additional personnel to bolster campus security. This funding comes at a crucial time, as Morris Brown and other nearby HBCUs have faced increased threats in recent years.

"This $700,000 for Morris Brown College reflects a simple truth: Our students deserve to feel safe where they learn," said Rep. Williams.

"As our HBCUs continue to face increasing threats, these federal funds will support critical safety infrastructure so that students, faculty, and staff can learn and work in an environment that is secure, responsive, and prepared."

In addition to the security-focused grant, Morris Brown also received a $60,000 donation from the Sixth District of the AME Church, coinciding with the institution's 145th anniversary. This contribution will help support the college's ongoing revival and growth. Furthermore, Atlanta-based rapper and producer T.I. made a personal $50,000 donation to establish endowment scholarships for Morris Brown students.

"At a time that Morris Brown College is witnessing great growth, support that helps to enhance our campus security will truly make a difference as we prioritize the safety of our students, faculty and staff," said Morris Brown College President Dr. Kevin James. "As Morris Brown continues its resurgence, we are most appreciative of philanthropic support and will continue to be good ground for people to pour into."

The holistic investment in Morris Brown College, including the funding for critical safety infrastructure and student scholarships, demonstrates a deep commitment to the institution's long-term success. As the HBCU community continues to navigate evolving challenges, this multifaceted support serves as a model for how private, public, and community-based partnerships can uplift and empower Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

HBCUConnect.com commends the efforts of the Georgia government, the AME Church, and Atlanta's own T.I. for their investment in the future of Morris Brown College. This funding will not only enhance the safety and security of the campus, but also provide crucial scholarship opportunities for students, ensuring that the legacy and impact of this historic institution continue to grow. The HBCU community is strengthened by such impactful partnerships and philanthropic support.
