Redlands School District Announces HBCU Campus Tour for 20 Students

Redlands School District Announces HBCU Campus Tour for 20 Students
Posted By: Will Moss on February 04, 2026

Redlands, CA - In a move to expand educational opportunities for its students, the Redlands Unified School District Board has approved a college tour to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for 20 high school students, despite some debate over the program's cost and equity considerations.

The tour, set to take place in the coming months, will give selected students from Redlands the chance to visit several renowned HBCU campuses, including Howard University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College. The district has allocated funding to cover the costs of transportation, lodging, and other expenses associated with the trip.

Key Takeaway: This initiative aims to expose Redlands students to the rich academic and cultural experiences offered by HBCUs, which have a long history of providing high-quality education and supporting the advancement of African American students.

The decision to organize the HBCU tour was not without debate, as some board members raised concerns about the program's cost and the need to ensure equitable access to such opportunities across the district.

However, the majority of the board ultimately voted in favor of the tour, recognizing its potential to broaden the horizons of participating students and inspire them to consider attending an HBCU for their college education.

Redlands Unified School District, located in the heart of Southern California, has a diverse student population and a strong commitment to providing its students with diverse educational experiences. The HBCU tour aligns with the district's efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure that all students have access to valuable learning opportunities that can shape their future academic and career paths.

"This college tour is an important step in helping our students explore the rich history, vibrant culture, and exceptional academic programs offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities," said Superintendent Dr. Mauricio Arellano. "We are excited to provide this opportunity and support our students as they consider their post-secondary options."

HBCUConnect.com, the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, applauds the Redlands Unified School District's initiative to expose its students to the transformative power of HBCUs. By fostering connections and broadening perspectives, this tour has the potential to inspire the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will contribute to the continued success and growth of the HBCU community.
