Claflin University President Demands Accountability After Opposing Coach's Arrest

Claflin University President Demands Accountability After Opposing Coach
Posted By: Will Moss on February 05, 2026

Claflin University, a renowned Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in South Carolina, is demanding answers and accountability from the local authorities after the head coach of an opposing team was handcuffed and arrested during a recent basketball game.

The incident occurred on February 11th, when the Claflin Panthers were hosting the Benedict College Tigers in a crucial conference matchup. During a heated moment in the game, the Benedict head coach, Artis Maddox, was arrested by campus police and handcuffed on the sideline, much to the shock and dismay of the players, coaches, and fans in attendance.

Key Takeaway: Claflin University's president is calling for a thorough investigation and accountability measures following the controversial arrest of the opposing team's head coach during a basketball game.

Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, the President of Claflin University, has expressed serious concerns about the incident and the subsequent handling of the situation. In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Warmack questioned the actions of the campus police and the rationale behind the coach's arrest, stating that the university is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all student-athletes and coaches.

Furthermore, Dr. Warmack revealed that the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the conference to which both Claflin and Benedict belong, has levied a fine against Claflin University for the incident.

The president, however, has vowed to appeal the fine, arguing that the university should not be held responsible for the actions of the campus police and that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the arrest.

"We are deeply concerned about the actions taken by the campus police and the subsequent fine imposed by the CIAA. As an institution committed to fostering a inclusive and equitable environment, we will not tolerate any form of excessive force or unwarranted arrests, especially when it involves our guests and opponents."

The HBCUConnect community stands in solidarity with Claflin University and its quest for accountability and justice. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by HBCU institutions and their student-athletes, who often confront systemic biases and disproportionate treatment. We call upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, ensuring that the rights and dignity of all individuals involved are protected.
