HBCU Hoops Highlights: Howard's Dynamic Duo Leads the Way

HBCU Hoops Highlights: Howard
Posted By: Will Moss on February 17, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), one of the premier NCAA Division I conferences for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), has announced its latest Men's Basketball Weekly Honors, presented by Wells Fargo. And the standout performers hail from the proud halls of Howard University, a historic HBCU institution that has a rich legacy of athletic excellence.

Cedric Taylor III, a dynamic guard for the Howard Bison, has been named the MEAC Player of the Week. Taylor's electrifying play has been a driving force behind Howard's strong start to the season. The junior from Moreno Valley, California has been consistently stuffing the stat sheet, showcasing his well-rounded skill set and leadership on the court.

Key Takeaway: Cedric Taylor III's Player of the Week honor spotlights the talented student-athletes that HBCUs like Howard University continue to produce, inspiring the next generation of HBCU sports stars.

Joining Taylor in the weekly honors is his teammate, Bryce Harris, who was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week. Harris, a sophomore forward, has been a disruptive force on the defensive end, using his size, athleticism, and tenacity to shut down opposing offenses. His prowess on the defensive end has been a crucial component of Howard's success this season.

The MEAC's Rookie of the Week award went to Daveyon Lydner of Coppin State University, another HBCU program with a rich basketball tradition.

Lydner, a freshman guard, has burst onto the scene with his impressive play, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from HBCU programs across the conference.

"These weekly honors are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes," said MEAC Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas. "The HBCU community takes great pride in the achievements of our student-athletes, who represent the excellence and resilience that are hallmarks of the HBCU experience."

The MEAC, founded in 1970, has long been a hub of HBCU basketball excellence, producing numerous NBA players and serving as a platform for talented student-athletes to showcase their skills. The conference's weekly honors program, sponsored by Wells Fargo, shines a well-deserved spotlight on the standout performers who are upholding the HBCU basketball legacy.

HBCUConnect.com Perspective: The success of Howard University's Cedric Taylor III and Bryce Harris in the MEAC weekly honors underscores the rich talent pipeline that HBCUs continue to produce. These accolades not only highlight the individual excellence of these players, but also serve as a testament to the transformative power of the HBCU experience. By showcasing the achievements of HBCU student-athletes, we inspire the next generation of HBCU sports stars to pursue their dreams and carry on the proud tradition of HBCU athletic prowess.
