Legendary HBCU Coach Bobby Collins Steps Down After Restoring Competitiveness at Shaw University

Legendary HBCU Coach Bobby Collins Steps Down After Restoring Competitiveness at Shaw University
Posted By: Will Moss on February 28, 2026

RALEIGH, NC - In a move that has sent shockwaves through the HBCU sports community, veteran coach Bobby Collins has announced his resignation as the head coach of the Shaw University Bears men's basketball team. Collins, known for his transformative impact on HBCU programs, departs the Bears after leading the team through a critical period of rebuilding and growth.

Collins' tenure at Shaw University was marked by a relentless commitment to restoring the program's competitiveness within the storied Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference. When he took over the reins in 2020, the Bears were struggling, having posted a dismal 5-23 record the previous season. However, Collins wasted no time in turning the tide, guiding the team to a 10-11 record in his first year, a remarkable five-game improvement.

Key Takeaway: Under Collins' leadership, the Shaw Bears regained their footing in the CIAA, posting three consecutive .500 or better seasons in conference play and advancing to the CIAA Quarterfinals in the 2022-23 campaign.

Collins' impact extended beyond the win-loss column, as he also played a pivotal role in restoring the team's culture and earning the CIAA Tournament Men's Basketball Sportsmanship Award in 2023.

His deep HBCU coaching experience, which includes successful stints at South Carolina State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, and Winston-Salem State, made him a respected figure within the HBCU basketball community.

Despite the program's promising trajectory, the Bears' recent 11-17 record appears to have prompted a leadership change at Shaw University. As the institution seeks to elevate the team to new heights, Collins' departure represents a bittersweet moment, as he leaves behind a foundation of renewed competitiveness and a renewed sense of pride within the Bears' loyal fan base.

"Coach Collins has been a true champion for HBCU basketball, and his work at Shaw University will not be forgotten. His ability to transform struggling programs and instill a winning culture is unparalleled, and we are confident he will continue to make a lasting impact on the HBCU sports landscape."

At HBCUConnect.com, we recognize the significance of this transition at Shaw University. Coaches like Bobby Collins are the lifeblood of HBCU athletics, as they not only mold talented athletes but also inspire and empower young men to become leaders within their communities. While the Bears now face another reset, the foundation laid by Collins ensures that the next chapter in Shaw University basketball will be one of continued growth and success.
