DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) athletics department and the wider HBCU community are mourning the tragic passing of former NCCU football player Steven Perry. Perry, who was just 30 years old, died in a car accident on the Durham Freeway this past Sunday morning, as confirmed by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Perry was a beloved member of the NCCU football program, playing as an offensive lineman from 2009 to 2012. During his time with the Eagles, he was a dedicated student-athlete who helped anchor the offensive line and contributed to the team's success on the field. Beyond his athletic achievements, Perry was known for his infectious positivity, strong work ethic, and unwavering support for his teammates and coaches.

Key Takeaway: The NCCU community has lost a cherished alum and champion whose impact extended far beyond the gridiron. Steven Perry's legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the standard of excellence he embodied as a proud HBCU student-athlete.

In a statement, NCCU's Athletic Director Ingrid Wicker McCree expressed her deepest condolences to Perry's family and friends, saying, "Steven was a valued member of our NCCU family, and his passing is a profound loss for our community. He exemplified the values and spirit that make our university and athletics program so special. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic event."

Perry's former head coach, Jerry Mack, also shared his heartbreak over the loss of a player he deeply admired. "Steven was an outstanding young man who made a lasting impact on our program.

He was the embodiment of what it means to be an NCCU Eagle - a true scholar-athlete who gave his all on the field and in the classroom. We will miss his smile, his leadership, and the passion he brought to everything he did."

The NCCU football team and athletic department have rallied around Perry's family during this difficult time. They have set up a memorial fund to support his loved ones and honor his legacy. Current and former players, coaches, and staff have shared an outpouring of tributes on social media, celebrating Perry's life and the indelible mark he left on the HBCU community.

"Steven was the embodiment of what it means to be an NCCU Eagle - a true scholar-athlete who gave his all on the field and in the classroom. We will miss his smile, his leadership, and the passion he brought to everything he did."

Why this story matters to the HBCU community: The tragic passing of Steven Perry is a profound loss for the NCCU family and the broader HBCU athletics community. As a dedicated student-athlete who exemplified the values of excellence, leadership, and service, Perry's legacy represents the profound impact HBCU institutions have on shaping the lives of young people. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the deep sense of community and brotherhood that unites HBCU alumni, student-athletes, and supporters. In honoring Perry's memory, the NCCU community is reaffirming its commitment to nurturing future generations of HBCU leaders and champions.
