Behind the Wheel of the Hot 2026 Kia Sportage Review

Behind the Wheel of the Hot 2026 Kia Sportage Review
Posted By: Randi Payton on March 05, 2026

Compact SUVs remain competitive, and Kia’s best-selling model for 2026, the Sportage, gets a major mid-cycle update to stay ahead. During a week with the new Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD, I tested its improvements, focusing on everyday usability, comfort, and the strong shift toward electrification that defines this year’s version.

Although it isn't a full redesign, the 2026 Sportage impresses with refined updates across style, technology, and mechanical features. The most notable upgrade is the expanded hybrid lineup, now offering more power. Additional news includes all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid options, which benefit drivers seeking both improved fuel economy and better all-weather performance.

Inside, a new 12.3-inch touchscreen features Kia’s latest ccNC (Connected Car Navigation Cockpit) system, which comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with over-the-air (OTA) software updates. The safety suite is also more advanced, with improved adaptive cruise control and a sleek new Head-Up Display (HUD) on top trims. Overall, the material quality and cabin layout surpass most competitors in this class.

Outside, the 2026 Sportage looks more attractive thanks to Kia’s evolving design language. The front now features a bold grille with LED headlights, similar to its larger Sorento sibling. Redesigned bumpers and new 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels give it a tough, modern look. The new color options, including Wolf Grey and Heritage Blue, help it stand out from other similar crossovers.

Models/Price: Kia offers several trim levels and powertrain options for the 2026 Sportage, including LX, EX, X-Line, SX, SX Prestige, and the tough X-Pro Prestige. Customers can choose from gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. Prices start at $28,690 for the gas LX, $31,685 for the standard hybrid, and $41,885 for the PHEV X-Line. A fully equipped PHEV Prestige can be purchased for $48,000, still undercutting competitors with similar features.

Power/Performance: During my test week, I drove the Hybrid SX-Prestige model with a 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain that produces 232 horsepower. It was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The acceleration was quiet and smooth for daily driving, though it can feel strained when pushed.
The ride is optimized for comfort, smoothly absorbing bumps and maintaining a quiet cabin. Steering feels light and easy to handle, though it’s not particularly sporty, and there’s some body roll when taking corners.

Fuel Economy: The EPA rates the FWD hybrid at 42 mpg combined, while the AWD versions get 35 mpg combined. The base gasoline engine averages 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The Kia Sportage offers a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and receives top safety ratings, including the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2026, giving peace of mind to families and commuters alike.
