A Young Inspiration: Honoring the Legacy of Onyx Williams at North Carolina Central University

A Young Inspiration: Honoring the Legacy of Onyx Williams at North Carolina Central University
Posted By: Will Moss on March 06, 2026

In the heart of Durham, North Carolina, the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) basketball program recently paused to honor the life of a remarkable young man – Onyx Williams. This five-year-old's courageous spirit and infectious joy left an indelible mark on the HBCU community, and his memory will continue to inspire players, coaches, and fans alike.

Onyx's story captured the hearts of people across the Triangle and beyond after his family shared his battle with high-grade glioma, a rare and aggressive brain tumor. Despite the challenges he faced, Onyx's unwavering positive attitude and determination to live life to the fullest touched everyone he encountered.

Key Takeaway: Onyx's journey with the NCCU basketball team showcased the deep bonds that often exist within the HBCU community, where athletes, families, and local supporters come together as one.

Last November, Onyx was invited to be the "Coach for a Day" with the HBCU squad. The young Durham native spent time with the team, attended meetings, and even had the chance to draw plays on the whiteboard alongside head coach LeVelle Moton.

This experience was a testament to the HBCU community's commitment to embracing and supporting its young fans, families, and local communities as extensions of the program.

For Moton, Onyx's brief time with the team left a lasting impact. The coach reflected on the valuable lessons the young boy taught him and the team, saying, "He showed me perspective. Hopefully he showed our team perspective. He showed us how to approach each day with a smile on his face. Just showed us how to fight."

"The real victory of life is being here. Being beloved. Showing yourself and loving your neighbor, and affecting and impacting other people's lives as much as possible," Moton said.

Tragically, Onyx passed away on March 3rd, but his legacy lives on within the NCCU basketball program and the broader HBCU community. The team honored him with a moment of silence, reflecting on the courage and joy he brought to the court.

At HBCUConnect, we recognize the profound impact that stories like Onyx's have on our community. They remind us of the deep connections and unwavering support that define the HBCU experience, where student-athletes, coaches, and young fans come together as a family. Onyx's life may have been brief, but his smile and spirit will continue to inspire generations of HBCU supporters for years to come.
