The Xavier University of Louisiana Gold Nuggets came agonizingly close to pulling off an opening-round upset at the NAIA tournament, but a clutch three-pointer in the game's final seconds sealed their fate in a devastating 88-87 loss to William Carey.

The Gold Nuggets found themselves in an early hole as William Carey jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game and extended their advantage to as many as 16 points in the first half. Despite outstanding shooting from Leon Williams and Wayne Randall-Bashay, who combined for 21 points on an impressive 10-of-11 shooting from the field, XULA trailed throughout the opening period.

Both teams shot an identical 57% from the field in the first half, but William Carey's 7-1 advantage at the free throw line proved crucial, allowing them to take a 47-40 lead into halftime.

Second-Half Surge Led by Bench Spark

The Gold Nuggets stormed back in the second half, ignited by an unlikely hero off the bench.

XULA opened the second half with a commanding 19-4 run, capped by a Turner three-pointer that gave the Gold Nuggets a 59-51 lead with 12:13 remaining. The momentum continued as Xavier built their largest advantage at 85-76 with just 2:21 left on the clock.

Crushing Final Minutes

What happened next was every team's nightmare scenario. From that point forward, the Gold Nuggets' offense completely stalled:

• Did not attempt another field goal
• Missed three of their last five free throws
• Committed three critical turnovers

William Carey capitalized on Xavier's late-game struggles. Trailing 87-85 with 38 seconds remaining, they secured the ball with a chance to win. After missing an initial shot attempt, they grabbed the offensive rebound and swung the ball to Troy Dunn, who connected on a three-pointer with just 13 seconds left to give his team the lead.

Xavier called a timeout after nearly turning the ball over while advancing up the court and drew up a quality look at a potential game-winner, but the shot wouldn't fall. The Gold Nuggets' season ended with a final record of 20-11.
