South Carolina State Legend Javon Hargrave Signs $23M Deal with Green Bay Packers

South Carolina State Legend Javon Hargrave Signs $23M Deal with Green Bay Packers
Posted By: Will Moss on March 18, 2026

One of the most successful HBCU products in NFL history continues to thrive at football's highest level. Javon Hargrave, the standout defensive tackle from South Carolina State University, has signed a lucrative two-year contract with the Green Bay Packers worth up to $23 million as he enters his 11th NFL season.

Key Takeaway: Hargrave's 11-year NFL career now ranks among the longest tenures by any active HBCU alumnus in the league, showcasing the sustained excellence of Historically Black College talent at the professional level.

The deal includes $13 million guaranteed and carries an average annual salary of $11.5 million. Hargrave will earn $13 million in first-year cash during the 2026 season, with that full amount guaranteed. For the former Bulldog, this contract represents another milestone in a career that has consistently proven the elite caliber of HBCU-developed talent.

Filling a Critical Need in Green Bay

The Packers moved swiftly to secure Hargrave after reshaping their defensive line this offseason. Following the trade of veteran tackle Kenny Clark to the Dallas Cowboys and the departure of Colby Wooden, Green Bay needed proven interior production. Hargrave is expected to step into a starting role at either three-technique or nose tackle alongside Devonte Wyatt.

The signing also reunites Hargrave with defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, with whom he previously worked during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. That partnership produced spectacular results—Hargrave recorded a career-high 11 sacks during the 2022 season while helping the Eagles reach Super Bowl LVII, cementing his reputation as one of the NFL's most disruptive interior pass rushers.

A Legacy Built at South Carolina State

Before becoming an NFL mainstay, Hargrave dominated at South Carolina State, establishing himself as one of the most feared defenders in FCS football history.

His college résumé speaks volumes:

  • 37 career sacks and 62 tackles for loss across 47 games
  • Tied an FCS single-game record with six sacks against Bethune-Cookman in 2014
  • Back-to-back MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors (2014, 2015)
  • Mel Blount HBCU Defensive Player of the Year
  • Inducted into the South Carolina State Athletic Hall of Fame (2022)
  • Inducted into the MEAC Hall of Fame (2024)

Consistency and Durability Define His NFL Career

Since entering the league in 2016, Hargrave has appeared in 146 games with 130 starts. His career statistics are impressive across the board: 432 tackles, 49 sacks, and 84 quarterback hits, along with two Pro Bowl selections.

Hargrave's durability stands out in an era where interior defensive linemen often struggle with injuries. He has played in 15 or more games in nine of his first 10 NFL seasons. Between 2021 and 2023, he led all interior linemen in Next Gen Stats quarterback pressures while ranking near the top of the league in sacks at his position.

Even during his single season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2025, Hargrave remained productive, finishing with 52 tackles and 3.5 sacks across 16 games.

Among Elite HBCU Company

Hargrave now ranks among the most experienced HBCU veterans still active in the NFL, alongside players such as Grover Stewart of Albany State and Tytus Howard of Alabama State. Before retiring in 2025, offensive tackle Terron Armstead completed a 12-season career that stood as one of the longest runs by an HBCU alumnus in recent NFL history.

For the HBCU community, Hargrave's continued success serves as a powerful reminder of the talent pipeline that Historically Black Colleges continue to provide to professional football. His journey from the Bulldogs to an 11-year NFL career exemplifies the excellence and perseverance that define HBCU athletics.
