Jackson State University Names Dr. Denise Jones Gregory as 14th President
Posted By: Will Moss on April 19, 2026

After an eight-month comprehensive national search, Jackson State University has officially appointed Dr. Denise Jones Gregory as its 14th president, marking a historic moment for the institution as a distinguished alumna returns to lead her alma mater.

Gregory, who has served as interim president since May 2025 and previously held the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs at JSU, emerged victorious from a highly competitive pool of 79 applicants. The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning announced her selection after she advanced through multiple rounds of rigorous interviews.

Key Takeaway: Dr. Gregory becomes the first JSU alumna to return as president in recent history, bringing both institutional knowledge and fresh vision to lead the university into its next chapter.

Dr. Steven Cunningham, vice president of the Board of Trustees and chair of the search committee, expressed confidence in the selection, stating:

"We are confident in Dr. Gregory's ability to help write the next chapter in Jackson State University's long history."

A Distinguished JSU Graduate Returns Home

Gregory's appointment carries special significance as she earned her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Jackson State in 1994, graduating magna cum laude.

She later received her doctorate in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology, demonstrating the caliber of excellence that JSU produces.

Her leadership credentials include prestigious training programs:

  • The New Presidents Academy
  • The HBCU Executive Leadership Institute
  • The Willa B. Player Executive Leaders Program

Strong Community Support

The JSU community has rallied behind Gregory's appointment. Patrease Edwards, president of the JSU National Alumni Association, emphasized the alumni network's commitment to the new president's success.

"Today we begin a new and exciting part of the story of Jackson State. We are prepared to support Dr. Gregory as she takes on this role."

As provost, Gregory demonstrated strong leadership in critical areas including oversight of academic programs, faculty development, and strategic planning. Her deep institutional knowledge and proven track record position her well to guide JSU's continued growth.

Gregory's leadership will focus on three key priorities:

  • Academic excellence
  • Student success
  • Institutional growth

As Jackson State enters this pivotal new chapter, Dr. Gregory's appointment represents both continuity with the university's proud traditions and a forward-looking vision for the future of one of America's premier HBCUs.
