Spelman College Calls for Unity Following Miss Spelman Pageant Scoring Error
Posted By: Will Moss on April 24, 2026

Spelman College, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious HBCUs, has issued a statement calling for compassion and grace following an unprecedented situation in the institution's storied Miss Spelman pageant history.

For the first time ever, the Atlanta-based women's college has named two co-winners for the Miss Spelman 2026-27 title after a scoring miscalculation was discovered following the pageant's conclusion. Juniors Jillian Collier and Kinsley Wilson will both serve as Miss Spelman during the upcoming academic year.

Key Takeaway: In a historic first, Spelman College has crowned two Miss Spelman winners after a technical scoring error was discovered, prompting the institution to name both contestants as co-titleholders.

The situation unfolded when Wilson was initially crowned Miss Spelman on pageant night. However, a subsequent review of the scoring revealed a technical error in the calculations.

When judges recalculated the scores accurately, Collier actually had the higher total score.

Understanding the Scoring System

The Miss Spelman pageant employs a comprehensive scoring system that evaluates contestants across multiple categories:

  • Pre-pageant interview
  • Performance and artistic expression
  • Question-and-answer portion
  • Presentation and community achievement
  • Overall composite score

The miscalculation affected the final outcome, leading college officials to make the historic decision to honor both young women with the title.

As news of the situation spread across social media and sparked intense debate within the Spelman community and beyond, the college released a statement on Thursday addressing the controversy. The institution also announced it would pause social media activity for the day, encouraging the community to focus on compassion.

Our students are not just pageant contestants; they are our daughters and our sisters. We invite our alumnae and the broader community to follow our example. We ask that you treat one another with the kindness and grace that Spelman is known for.

The statement reflects Spelman's commitment to protecting its students while navigating this challenging situation. The college's appeal for kindness underscores the values that have made Spelman a beacon of excellence in HBCU education and a developer of accomplished Black women leaders for generations.
