Edward Waters University Elevates Todd Day Sr. to Head Coach Following Successful Interim Stint

Edward Waters University has officially named former NBA veteran Todd Day Sr. as its head men's basketball coach, elevating him from the interim position he held since November. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the Jacksonville-based HBCU as it continues to build its presence in NCAA Division II competition.

Day, who brings an impressive basketball résumé spanning from high school stardom through professional ranks, guided the Tigers through the 2024-25 season with promising results, including a .500 mark in conference play. His leadership showed particular dividends in postseason action when Edward Waters secured a 71-63 victory over Central State in the opening round of the SIAC Tournament.

University president Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr. expressed strong confidence in the hire, emphasizing Day's comprehensive basketball background and leadership philosophy.

While the Tigers' season ended with a 75-61 first-round loss to Virginia State in the Black College Invitational Tournament, Day's body of work demonstrated the program's upward trajectory under his guidance.

Proven Track Record at NAIA Level

Before joining Edward Waters, Day established himself as a winning coach at Philander Smith University, where he achieved remarkable success at the NAIA level. His accomplishments with the Panthers include:

• Back-to-back 21-win seasons
• Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship during the 2023-24 campaign
