Dr. Michael Eric Dyson Delivers Unforgettable Hip-Hop Inspired Address at Historic Bowie State Commencement

Posted By: Will Moss on June 05, 2026 Bowie State University made history on May 22, celebrating the largest graduating class in the institution's history as Maryland's oldest HBCU. The milestone Spring 2026 Commencement saw 887 students cross the stage, including 696 undergraduate students, 160 master's degree recipients, and 31 doctoral graduates. While the record-breaking class size was significant, it was keynote speaker Dr. Michael Eric Dyson who delivered a commencement address that graduates and social media viewers won't soon forget—one that seamlessly blended hip-hop culture with powerful messages about excellence and vision. Historic Milestone: Bowie State University graduated 887 students in Spring 2026, the largest class in the school's history, reflecting the continued growth and expanding impact of Maryland's oldest HBCU. Hip-Hop Meets Higher EducationThe renowned scholar, author, and social commentator transformed the commencement stage into a hip-hop history lesson, weaving together lyrics from iconic artists to encourage students to pursue greatness. In a memorable moment, Dyson referenced Eric B. & Rakim's classic "Move the Crowd," reciting portions of Rakim's legendary opening verse before delivering one of the song's most recognizable lines: How can I move the crowd? First of all, ain't no mistakes allowed. The moment drew a strong reaction from the audience as Dyson's message felt uniquely connected to the HBCU experience. He later incorporated references to Jay-Z and The Notorious B.I.G., using lyrics about ambition, struggle, and success to reinforce his message about perseverance. For a generation raised on hip-hop's influence, these references served as powerful examples of artists who imagined success long before achieving it. Vision and Preparation: The Core MessageBeyond the viral-worthy rap references, Dyson's central message focused on vision and mental preparation for success. If your mind isn't already there, your body isn't going to be there when you arrive. You got to imagine where you're heading. You have got to imagine a different future. Dyson challenged graduates to see themselves in positions of leadership before ever arriving there, telling them: "Aim high. You will be presidents and doctors and physicians and lawyers and entrepreneurs. Already be there in your mind." University President Dr. Aminta H. Breaux praised the historic class, stating: The Class of 2026 represents a powerful reflection of excellence and determination. Their accomplishments speak to the strength of Bowie State's academic programs and our commitment to developing graduates who lead, innovate and serve in a global society. Call to Civic EngagementDyson also urged graduates to remain engaged citizens and active participants in democracy, encouraging them to make their voices heard through voting and community involvement. "Free your mind and make it to the polls and make a difference. Be a Bulldog, BSU," he declared. Outstanding Graduates RecognizedSeveral graduates were honored for exceptional achievements:
The ceremony also included a posthumous Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership awarded to former athletics administrator Clyde Doughty Jr., whose family accepted the degree on his behalf. Additionally, Bowie State recognized its Golden Graduates from the Class of 1976 during their 50th reunion celebration. Together with the Class of 1977, those alumni have built a scholarship endowment that has grown to nearly $57,000 in support of future Bowie State students. As the Class of 2026 joins Bowie State's growing alumni network, they carry both their degrees and a memorable lesson from one of the nation's most influential voices: imagine the future you want, prepare for it, and don't be afraid to move the crowd along the way.
