New Board Game "Black Blocks" Teaches Financial Literacy Through HBCU Legacy and Black History

A groundbreaking new board game is making financial literacy education more culturally relevant for HBCU students and African American families nationwide. Black Blocks, developed by entrepreneur David E. Rogers, combines practical money management skills with the inspiring stories of Black financial pioneers - many of whom have deep connections to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Bridging the Financial Literacy Gap

The game addresses a critical challenge facing our community: financial illiteracy costs Americans $352 billion annually, with Black families bearing a disproportionate burden. While only 28% of Black Americans feel confident about their financial knowledge, Black Blocks provides an engaging pathway to financial empowerment that honors our heritage.

"For too long, financial education has ignored the unique challenges and triumphs of our community," said Rogers, founder and CEO of Black Blocks LLC. "Black Blocks celebrates our financial pioneers while teaching the next generation practical wealth-building strategies that honor our heritage and secure our future."

Learning Through Legacy

The game features influential figures whose stories resonate deeply within HBCU communities:

  • Madam C.J. Walker - America's first female self-made millionaire who supported Tuskegee Institute
  • Booker T. Washington - Tuskegee University founder and advocate for Black economic empowerment
  • Maggie Lena Walker - First African American woman to charter a bank
  • Althea Gibson - Tennis champion who broke barriers in sports and business

Through innovative dual-deck gameplay, players navigate real-world financial scenarios while discovering how these pioneers overcame obstacles to build generational wealth. Life Cards present situations like starting a business, buying a home, or investing in education - challenges familiar to many HBCU graduates entering the professional world.

Perfect for HBCU Programming

Beta testing in Black communities showed remarkable engagement, with teenagers becoming actively involved in budgeting conversations and researching Black business leaders. "My 14-year-old daughter learned about Maggie Lena Walker and asked to open her first savings account the next day," shared Atlanta beta tester Keisha Williams.

Key Features Making Black Blocks Ideal for HBCUs:

  • Cultural authenticity - Features figures who supported and emerged from HBCU communities
  • Community-focused - Addresses financial challenges specific to African American experiences
  • Intergenerational learning - Perfect for family engagement events and alumni gatherings
  • Educational alignment - Supports financial literacy curriculum while celebrating Black history
  • Practical application - Teaches budgeting, investing, entrepreneurship, and wealth preservation

The game has already garnered support from Black educators, financial advisors, and community organizations. Special pricing is available for HBCUs, community centers, and youth organizations looking to incorporate Black Blocks into their financial empowerment programming.
