Fisk University Faces Alumni Protest Over Proposed $400 Million Data Center

Fisk University finds itself at the center of a growing controversy as alumni, students, and community leaders rally against a proposed Innovation Center that would house a large data center on campus. The Wednesday demonstration at the university gates brought together protesters who are demanding transparency and environmental accountability from the historic Nashville HBCU.

Leading the charge is Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones, D-Nashville, a Fisk graduate who invoked the legacy of civil rights icon and fellow alumnus John Lewis in calling for the university to halt the project. The proposed facility is part of Fisk's ambitious $1 billion Quantum Leap campus master plan.

"We're here to get in the way of a project that we know will be detrimental not only to our Fisk campus, but to the surrounding community," Jones said at a press conference.

Environmental Justice Concerns

Representative Jones raised pointed concerns about environmental justice, arguing that such facilities disproportionately impact Black, brown, and low-income communities. His criticism was sharp and direct.

"If this project was so amazing, as they said, for universities, it would be at Vanderbilt. But instead they're coming to Fisk University, using this tactic of extraction and preying on our HBCU," Jones stated.

Winston Wellington Wright, a graduate of both Fisk and Morehouse School of Medicine, launched an online petition that has already gathered more than 6,000 signatures.

"We are standing in a zip code that consistently ranks within the top three for the highest rates of asthma prevalence in emergency department-related visits across the city. Data centers built for AI are threats to our public health and quality of life," Wright said.

Student and Alumni Voices

Fisk student Eriqua Martin delivered an emotional appeal, emphasizing the sacred nature of the HBCU campus.

"This campus is not just property. It is not raw acreage waiting to be leveraged," Martin said, adding that "true progress can never be bought at the expense of our people, our culture and our environment."

Timothy Hughes, president of the Nashville NAACP and chair of community engagement for the National Fisk University Alumni Association, clarified that the opposition is not anti-technology.

"These conversations are not anti-technology. They are about ensuring the growth that occurs responsibly, transparently, and with meaningful public participation," Hughes explained.

Additional concerns raised by speakers included:

• Increased pollution and energy consumption
• Higher water demand on existing infrastructure
• Rising utility costs for the North Nashville community
• Diesel pollution from data center operations
• Lack of community input before the announcement

Organizers are demanding a town hall meeting, full disclosure about corporate partners, and a community benefits agreement before the project moves forward. While Fisk officials have said the project follows a "do no harm" philosophy, protesters say they are still waiting for substantive answers about how the university plans to protect students and the surrounding community.
