My Story About Hurricane Katrina
|
Posted By: Alexis Parker on September 13, 2006 I am a 17 year hurricane evacuee who happend to experience the harsh reality of Katrina and its aftermath at age 16. It all started on August 28,2005 when all Orleans Parish residents were informed on the upcoming hurricane and to tell you the truth I thought it would be another one of those false calls on a "worst than ever hurricane" because one year before we were told to evacuate for Hurricane Ivan which was to be a category 5 but he didnt mess up our great city.Katrina was expected to do less than what was really expected. But it seems as though we were fooled abundantly. My family and I took refuge at a hotel in the eastern New Orleans area.Monday morning on August 29,2005 Katrina hit with strong winds but no water until after the storm. The water rushed in so fast and filled up the hotel so quick, we were trapped. We sat in that hotel for a week with nothing but gas station food that some of the males in the hotel luted from a nearby gas station for our discretion.People really dont know what we went through but yet they had the nerve to judge us on what they expected of the murder capital when really our intentions were nothing but real and for our survival.I cant tell you in a million words how I felt that week but I can tell you Im happy I survived and Im a real survivor. On Friday folowing the Katrina episode a helicopter finally came to rescue us. When we were dropped of on the highway where all evacuees were taken I saw my parents for the last time before we parted our ways.My uncle, cousin and I were to walk back to my cousin's house where water did not destroy her home. When we got to Jefferson Parish we were told to walk back to the highway everybody had to get out.So we took our long journey,in the water I might add and walk back to the highway where we waited eight hours for a bus to come and take us to Texas.Once I got to Texas I had a great meal and such terrific hospitality that Katrina didnt hurt me as much.Right now I am back with my parents, Im a Senior in high school and Im working on going to college.I still hurt everyday about this Katrina situation but I live through it and let it be a lesson to me.I've learned that you cant take life itself for granted because just like that it can be washed away and I mean that literally. I hope Katrina can be a lesson for America itself also.We need to come together as a people and not discrimnate on the basis of color, creed, religion or belief. _________________ *~*~*~Hurricane Katrina might have detroyed my hometown but it did not destroy my spirit*~*~* If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
