Hello friends of HBCU Connect I have something to ask. What the hell is going on with religion these days, I swear christianity in the form of Catholicism is racist now I don't know much about being a catholic but it seems to me that the elections to pick a new pope are as racist and biased as the American govt.

When was the last time you seen or heard of a black pope? Never and there were two that were, shall you say running for position as pope but to no avail a pope was picked and for good measure to show that an African pope is not good enough to do God's will. But I hate to tell people that Jesus Christ himself was of African descent. Well back to my subject can we get a black pope? We talk about how God has no favorites and thats true but the world does and for the people who vote popes into their position I think its just sad..........Holla back on this one people

Bro. Howard,

It's insightful that your post is about religion. As a student, my focus was on the role religion and philosophy plays in social movements thoughout the world. Equally appropriate is your dismay over what, at least on the surface, might appear to be overt racial prejudice on the part of the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church in selecting yet another Caucasian pontiff. I was equally surprised, but for a slightly different reason. I think it was short-sighted, given the changing face of the world's population, for the Vatican not to select a pope who reflects that shift, but I would stop short of calling the selection outright racist. As a person of African decent raised Roman Catholic in Southeast Louisiana, I know a number of devout Catholics who are persons of color. Moreover, the Roman Catholic church has selected African Popes in years past (http://www.nbccongress.org/black-catholics/african-popes.asp), though it's hard to know if these popes where black africans or if they were merely of African ancestry (like European South Africaans). But, you make a good point about the fact that the Roman Catholic church has put itself in a defensive position at this point. And with the s*x abuse scandels of the past few years and the statements Benidict XIV has made about people of different faiths in the past they may be facing an uphill battle for the the hearts and minds of people of color throughout the world.
