Posted By: Jehan Bunch on October 09, 2006 SIAC names 2006-07 Preseason All-Conference Basketball Teams October 4, 2006 Tucker, GA – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is proud to announce the 2006-07 Men’s & Women’s Preseason All Conference Basketball Teams. Highlighting the list are six returning players from the 2005-06 all conference teams for the men and five returning players from the 2005-06 all conference teams for the women. Included in those list are the 2005-06 SIAC Players of the Year Brian Harper, of Paine College for the Men and Shekiya Tarpkins, of Fort Valley State University for the Women. Chosen to lead the SIAC at the end of the season is Paine College for the Men and the defending SIAC regular season champion Fort Valley State University for the Women. Brian Harper of Paine College, 2005-06 Player of the Year, headlines a list of six returning all conference members from a year ago including Adrian Comer, of Lane who was second in the SIAC in scoring last season averaging 19.2 points per game, Monyea Pratt, of Stillman, led the SIAC in rebounding last season averaging 8.2 per game, Ray Northern, of Fort Valley State led the SIAC in 3 point field goals averaging 2.68 per game, and Joshua Obiajunwa, of Benedict was third in the conference in defensive rebounds averaging 5.15 per game. Frank Pinson of Albany State University was also on the list of returning players. Newcomers to the list this year include Kenneth Saunders of Fort Valley State, Kenny Jones of Kentucky State, Rayco Currie of Lane, and Tyrell Curry of LeMoyne-Owen College. Shekiya Tarpkins of Fort Valley State, 2005-06 Player of the Year, leads the women’s squad and her team towards another regular season championship. Tarpkins was fifth in the conference last year in scoring averaging 15.2 points per game and lead the SIAC in steals averaging 3.7 steals per game. Dominating the post for FVSU is Deborah Jones who is also a returning All conference team member from a year ago. Natasha Gray of Benedict College who was tied for the lead in scoring last season with 17.1 points per game is returning for Benedict College. 3 point threat Vancherricka Mitchell for Stillman along with her teammate Bianca Burton returns as well. New players on the team include Valerie McQueen of Benedict College, Ashantye Jones of Kentucky State, JaMarva Earvin of Miles College, Savoyia Barrett of Paine College and Aisha Johnson of Tuskegee. Fort Valley State for the Women and Paine for the Men where chosen by the Coaches association to finish atop of the SIAC for the second consecutive year, as a tandem. For the men behind Paine is Morehouse predicted to finish second and Benedict predicted to finish third. For the Women Benedict is predicted to finish second and Paine is predicted to finish third. I know Fort Valley State's Head Coach who was a Asst. for Lefty Dr isell for Ga. State and he is going to have those guys ready to compete so SIAC look out!
