UMES Hawks for Football has Anniversary
|
Posted By: Joanne Johnson-Shaw on December 06, 2006 For almost 30 years, football has been absent from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. One year ago, December 10, 2006, several Alumni came together in an effort to restore a legacy that birthed such NFL notables as Oakland Raiders' Coach Art Shell, players Johnny Sample, Emerson Boozer, Roger Brown, Sherman Plunkett, Gerald Irons, Earl Christy, Billy Thompson, Carl Hairston, Curtis Gentry - 24 in all. Unfortunately, the same school who produced such players, no longer has a team to carry on their legacy. Former Coach Vernon "Skip" McCain was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in August 2006. A HFF, Inc. Endowment has been set up at UMES to raise funds for reinstatement. Joanne Johnson-Shaw and Dr. Bryant Mitchell, Co Chairpersons of the Hawks for Football organization, say that the love and spirit are there. Raising the support needed is a challenge, but not an obstacle. Want to help?
