The State of R&B

The State of R&B
Posted By: Ebony M. McKethern on December 10, 2006

A couple of weeks ago, I was at a house party and Beyonce's song "To the left" came on. Everyone was feeling it, and later on that night, her slow song "Resentment" came on. I was really feeling it and thought it was beautiful. I thought back to her last CD and I had to admit she had some decent slow jams on there. Therefore, I decided to purchase her new CD B-Day. Well, folks I was so disappointed that I think I am going to give it to one of my students as a Christmas gift.

First, lets keep in mine what R&B means, slow songs. Well, she only had one slow song on her CD; if you want to count the bonus song after "Resentment", I guess two than. All of her so-called songs were so fast it could have easily been a club banger. On top of that, for $13.99 and to only have 10 songs who see the hypocrisy in this? Now, I am only 24 years old but I am going to take it back for a min. Remember when 12 play came out by R-Kelly. The whole CD was slow music and you had maybe 4 fast songs that you fastfoward because you could not stand to hear him rap in them.

Remember Jodeci CDs, all of them were slow songs maybe two fast songs but who can remember what they were call. When you say, give me three Jodeci songs you are going to think of the slow ones, "Feenin", "Cry for you", "Forever my Lady". I mean really, who can recall any of their upbeat songs. On top of that, their last CD The Club, The Show, the After party had 21 songs on there and it wasn't a double CD. When was the last time you had a CD with 15 quality songs???

Well, this is the state of R&B now. Fast music with no feeling in it. Maybe that is why we have to have mix CD's now. If you have a special someone over, you can't just put it on a R&B CD like Beyonce and expect to hear all slow music while getting it on. You have to make your own CD and I bet you it will include, Jodeci, Keith Sweat, R-Kelly, you get my point. Everyone is saying, Hip Hop is dead but I am saying R&B is dead too. Who really makes good R&B music??? Ciara, Pretty Ricky? Beyonce, LaToya??? How can we even come up with a Neo Soul??? Is that really a new genre of music or is it what R&B should be? I would like your thought on the State of R&B.

Hi Ebony,

First, far be it for me to correct anyone unsolicited, but that song you listed as "To the left" is actually titled, "Irreplaceable."

Now, back to your question on what others think about the state of R&B. I’m going to be as tactful as I possibly can for this site, too.

Anyway, in my opinion, nowadays there are only two things that are seeming to sell in the world of so-called R&B, at least from the female side of the biz – (1) LOOKS and (2) HOW WELL ONE CAN SHAKE HER GENETICALLY CREATED AND EXERCISED CRAFTED BOD.
With all of the physical attributes taking over everyone’s cranial cavity, it’s leaving very little room for those who can REALLY SING anymore. But, I digress …

Nonetheless, I happen to think that Beyoncé is a fabulous entertainer, who can sing, too, but what ever happened to what’s her name? You know, the one who also was supposed to have come out with a record this year. I think her name is Kelly Rowland – Am I mistaken? Isn’t Beyoncé’s dad also supposed to be managing her career?

Now, let’s see, who do the guys (and some females) really want to see on stage? Beyoncé or Kelly? Let’s be real here. So, who’s going to get the most backing in the business? I think that’s already been shown, i.e. LOOKS ACCOUNT FOR A LOT, whether we want to accept it or not, R&B, and any other types of music, has steered more towards who one would rather SEE, than who one would rather HEAR. Anyway, in my opinion, R&B stands for Risqué & Beautiful.

PEACE,
Jane

Hey Jane,
I realize its irreplaceable but you know how some people know it by the chorus so thats why I wrote that. You make some good points and before I checked you out I was saying to myself, "dang she's a good writer. But now I see that you majored in journalism.

Well...I agree I like buying a R&B cd and playing it all the way through. I just bought Tamia's new CD and love it, it is true R&B to me. I am also a Beyonce fan and expected this album to be more upbeat since her first solo effort was very easy going. I think there are some CD's that you can just put in and let ride all night (OK--hands down 112's first CD was one of those CD's that you could do that with!) But I think the state of R&B is just evolving they way Hip Hop has evolved. I agree the music that is being put out should have more quality but the only way to fix that is by not buying the CD's that are being produced. As long as Beyonce sells 600,000 in the first week then she will continue to put out what she wants. I am a fan and I was disappointed with her only putting out 10 songs and only 2 (3) slow ones on the entire CD...but hey her sales don't say any other fans agree with me! Good Blog.

Good Post.R&B IS NOT DEAD!Some of you all out there are just listening to the radio too much.Hip Hop /R&B fused music sells and gets airplay due to its star power and commercialism. If you want pure R& B check for John Legend's new one.Ruben Studdard has a hot one out right now.India Arie people....HELLO?!...is any body feelin me?Brian McKnight has a new one out.Tyrese just dropped a half rap /half R&B joint. And in 2007..a true star is born in the form of Jennifer Hudson who just signed with Clive and his J Records imprint.Oh yeah when was it not cool to experiment with different musical genres. Please believe I would get my grind on to Justin Timberlake and T.I.'s MY LOVE remix. Before you form the opinion any more on R& B turn off the radio in your car, stop by Circuit City, and grab some soul off the rack.

Just for the record Justin Timberfake is not R&B. His wack falsetto over Timbalands played out beats are wack. For those of you who think I am hating because of his color its not the case I am just honest enough to say he's terrible while most other people want to pretend to see the emperors clothes while not fessing up to the fact that he is naked. If you like Timberfake then Robin Thicke will blow you away...he can actually sing. Music these days is terrible. Nas' new album should say Hip-hop and R & B are DEAD!!! Because in the mainstream they are. Artist with no talent take up the space on the radio and charts that in past years would be occupied by people who could actually sing. Now days you have a bunch of studio magic fakers who don't sound the same live as they do on their albums. Its pathetic which is why I only listen to talk radio now. Clearchannel, Radio One and the other major Radio conglomerates are only slaves to the wacked out music companies who grease their palms with payola and kickbacks to play whatever THEY deem is hot. Why do you think their are so many artist who can sing without record deals. Hell when Anita Baker gets dropped and hasn't got a deal but Ashante is on Album 3 or 4 there is a problem. Guys like Van Hunt, Raheem Devaughn, Rahsaan Patterson, Dwele, etc are fighting just to get heard but Justin Timberfake, Jim ones(not Jones as Nas said there is only one Jones in NYC LOL), and the Lean wit it Rock wit in Crew dominate the airwaves. Its a joke. While some of the stuff has merit most things played on the Radio is hot, warmed over, putrid, retread, garbage!! Just my $0.02.

Christopher I heard of Robin Thicke and someone told me to get his CD. You know, I didn't know Fantasia CD was coming out today. She also had alot of slow songs on her first CD. I just heard her song for her new CD for the first time on 106 and Park and guess what?? Its was a uptempo track so I'm hoping that the rest isn't like that. We'll see but I'm defintley about to go to Walmart to pick up Fantasia and John Legend. I'll let yall know what I think of it later.

Levi, everyone doesn't like Ruben. Personally, I think all his songs sound alike. He really is an average cat like most me that can sing in a choir if you ask me.

Tyrese: half rap, half R&B??? Thats enough alone that would make me run in the opposite direction.

Also check out a guy named Jeremiah. His latest single is a Duet with Shanice called "Love For a While" His Myspace is Myspace.com/jeremiahsoul or his website is www.Jeremiahonline.com. He and I went to high school together and are friends. His buzz is pretty big in NYC. He runs in the same circles as John Legend(they are friends), Bilal, Van Hunt, Frank McCombs, etc. He is an up and comer so I figured I'd give you the heads up. Rachelle Farrell is like a mentor to him and even she gave him props and endorse him. Check out all the cats I listed if you like real music. Also, there is a band made up of some people from Hampton (The REAL HU - STAND UP!!!) called The Fuzz Band who are aight too. Their sight is www.thefuzzband.com. They are a little out there on some songs but in a good way.
