Social Entrepreneurship/Emerging Markets

Social Entrepreneurship/Emerging Markets
Posted By: Rashid Mayes on March 14, 2007

...any burgeoning social entrepreneurs?

Microfinance, as demonstrated by Muhammad Yunus, appears to be one of the most successful forms of social entrepreneurship.

I think a similar success can be achieved through the dissemination of mobility expertise. Mobile technologies can have a profound impact in locations lacking a strong fixed line infrastructure.

Is anyone here considering how to create global wealth equality through technology?

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one looking in this direction. The Skoll Foundation is a good resource for information about microfinance and technology innovation. I subscribe to their weekly newsletter and get regular updates.

Also, Ashoka International has a fellowship program which will provide good benchmarks for successful implementation of these types of projects. For example, one project they funded involved creating a low-cost, self contained laptop cpu for African students, preprogrammed with educational software.

I agree that scalability is key, because you are generally dealing with populations for which traditional resource channels have failed (or do not exist yet).

We should definitely talk. I'm working on several projects which might interest you. I'm in the process of building an organization which helps young entrepreneurs develop socially conscious business ventures. Check out our website at www.baltimorerenaissance.org. Perhaps we could exchange ideas and insight. Feel free to shoot me an email - jcarter@baltimorerenaissance.org.

Thanks for information; I will definitely visit the resources you mentioned. Over the past few years I have really taken an interest in this area.

On the technology side, I run www.HostJ2ME.com and www.WorldDeveloper.org. HostJ2ME.com provides a free hosting and distribution service for mobile developers, a great resource for developers without access to high-availability high-bandwidth datacenters.

It is surprising just how many are involved on the mobile front and how such simple help can go a long way. About two weeks ago HostJ2ME.com added its first Rwandan company. In fact, much of the traffic and membership originates from developing markets, sub-Saharan Africa included.

I am just starting WorldDevloper.org. I hope to create a destination for engineers in developed markets to share knowledge and expertise with those in emerging markets.

There is never a shortage of noble causes and most leave the world the same as they found it. I would love to see a strong movement towards social responsibility, especially in the multigenerational African-American community.

We should definitely talk more. I just sent you an email.

BTW, are you a Baltimore native? I grew up in Columbia.

Good to see another Hamptonian / Marylander... live and grew up in White Marsh. I'd definitely like to hear more about your business, it looks like you've been working on this for quite some time. It's up to people like you and me to change the world; unfortunately there are very few people in line for the job.

I'll email you my contact info for followup. JC

Beautiful discussion and vision, gentlemen; I applaud you for its worth. My boss, R. Lee Gordon, is involved in developing a similar model nationally as is used by www.kiva.org. You may want to contact him at rgordon@uniteedesign.com. He is a very progressive thinker and, more of importance, a progressive doer!

All the blessed,

Prudee

Impetus can be elusive. I am in Accra, Ghana at the moment. This is my sixth (i think) visit to an emerging market country in recent years. Every time I make one of these trips it reinforces my belief that we are not doing all we can for economic equality...

I am a member of kiva; http://www.kiva.org/lender/rashid4147

I will check out Mr Gordon's work.
