Don Imus should be fired and we need your help

Posted By: gaby crumble on April 11, 2007 Dear SGA Representatives and fellow college students, Recent events involving Don Imus and the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball Team have created an environment on the Rust College campus in which the topic of popular conversation has been the social degradation of black women. These issues are widely discussed in classes as well as in common social areas like dorm lobbies and recreational facilities. I feel the comments made by Don Imus are the fruits of the underlining racial insensitivity prevalent in our mass media system. The fact that these statements are commonly accepted forms of expression and that black women are subjected to such deplorable adjectives should anger not only the black women who are the target of such offensive dialogue, but the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, extended family members, ancestors, and cultural community of the aforementioned party. Furthermore, the black community should be outraged that popular culture deems it okay to openly and privately disrespect the legacy of black people through verbal jest whatever the intention. It is my firm commitment not only as a black citizen, and a black student, but as a black woman to let comments made by Don Imus be a catalyst for social change. We the students of this country can set a precedent, imitating forefathers of the 60’s, saying “NO MORE!” We must demand that our women, our men, our children, and our community not be disrespected and sacrificed for “almighty dollar”. In protest, I request the help of the SGA members and students of your respective educational institutions to get out on your campuses and inform your fellow students about the recent events that have taken place in the media involving the young ladies at Rutgers University and Don Imus. I also request you encourage them to sign a petition stating their agreement to boycott the sponsors of the Don Imus Morning Show, which include the huge conglomerate, Time Warner. This is intended to be a collaborative effort involving college students and citizens from around the country and is not classified under an organizational title. I in turn will forward the signatures to Time Warner to demand the immediate termination of Don Imus and his morning crew from the airways. Your support is a vital component to expressing to the media how serious this matter should be taken. Affixed you will find a signature sheet that you may duplicate and use to circulate around your campuses. Please make sure to include your universities name and contact information once you collect your signatures. You will find mailing information below. Hopefully we are all in agreement as to what needs to be done and can move expeditiously to make the termination of The Don Imus Morning Show a reality. Thank you in advance for you cooperation.
