Offensive language

Offensive language
Posted By: Dawayne Starr on April 11, 2007

Now depending on who you ask some people are more offended than others about what Imus said on his show. I believe however that music, movies or anything else of that nature is not to blame. Think about this....If we were to put severe restrictions on rap music that would stop the use of the "N" word and stop calling woman every bad name know, what would that prove? That we have the power to change music? If this were to happen wouldn't we just keep going until half the dictionary was outlawed.

Don't get me wrong some words are much more hurtful than others, but at the same time, would you be offended if I called you studpid? Should we ban stupid too? Im not saying we should ignore whenever someone says something as Imus said on his show, but I am saying that before we caught up in our emotions and start demanding for change we need ask ourselves what offends me? See if you can laugh it off when you say it to youself. Try to understand the word. Try to understand how it got started. Obviously some will have many words and some will only have a few, but this shows you that we all have different levels of sensitivity and that we only can take so much. Which brings me to my point. Demanding a change to be done now isn't going to take away offensive language. There will always be something someone to say that will make someone feel bad. Instead of opening a dictionary and deciding on which words are allowed or not, let children know that what they say has and affect on some. Trust, if we do this, offensive language would be less of a problem.

And remember,
Always think before you act.

I agree banning certain words isn't going to improve our society. Everyone is trying to turn this situation into something it's not. Imus made the comments and should be held responsible for his ignorance, but with that simple statement of his " I don't know what the big deal is rappers say ho" we took the blame off of him and started to begin the anti-rap campaign again, and letting him off the hook in the process by acknowledging he may have a point. To me that's not right I really wonder when were going to blame a person for their actions and not by what drove them to their actions because regaurdless of what you see or hear from the media it is everyones own responsibility to do the right thing. I think the real question is are we ever going to have a real race disscussion in this country or are we just going to leave things be until another racist has an outburst? Because if that's the case I'm done with trying to help fix the problem that the U.S has when deal with race realations. We should of had it when Katrina hit if that didn't speak volumes I don't know what can.
