Tradition of Stepping Embraced by Latino Fraternities and Sororities

Posted By: Dawn Dickson on April 19, 2007 The tradition of stepping has been popularized by Black fraternities and sororities and combines different elements of dance, singing, and rhythm. That tradition has also been embraced by Latino fraternities and sororities over the past ten years. This has led to an increase in participation of Latino Greek organizations participating in step shows, stroll competitions, and social functions on college campuses throughout the United States. One measure of this phenomenon is evident in the submission of step show video clips posted on the website www.MyStepshow.com. “We’ve seen an influx of video clips from Latino Greeks since our initial launch in September 2006. Latino Greeks are participating in more step shows, stroll competitions, and social functions on college campuses,” states Freddie Stewart. “I’m happy to see Latino fraternities and sororities participating in stepping; it shows that they have embraced the tradition and the art form. They also bring elements of their culture into stepping which makes it even more entertaining.” A member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Stewart took a quick poll about the trend with members of other historically black fraternities and sororities. “All of the feedback that we’ve received has been extremely positive. A majority of the Black Greeks we polled were not aware of the growing participation of Latino Greek Organizations in stepping. Everyone found that the trend was positive and welcomes the diversity.” MyStepshow.com is a free video sharing website featuring step show video clips of from fraternities, sororities, church groups, and high school step teams. The website has recently updated it features to include an events calendar, step tease choreography game, and advertising opportunities. Greek organizations made it popular.With all due Respect my Brother,it does not belong to us, we just made it popular .We charge a fee for those who wish to see or take part in it.So tell me who's making it commecial ? I too welcome the Diversity of the Latinos and other orgs.It's all in the Family( read your history
