Unfair legal system

Unfair legal system
Posted By: Dawayne Starr on April 25, 2007

Last night I was watching nightline on abc and they told the story of a man named Billy Ray Johnson. Billy was a black man who was mentally challenged and was known my many in his neighborhood for being kind. One day this white man invited Billy to a party he was throwing because he danced "funny" and he wanted to show his friends. When he got there they put on a hip-hop song by lil kim (magic stick) and they all watched him dance. He was the only black person there and everyone else was drunk. They weren't happy with the black man at the party so they began to taunt him until one of the men punched him in the face. As he lay unconscious on the ground they decided the best thing to do was dump his body.

They drove to a wooded area and dropped his body on a top of a fire ant mound. Paramedics found his body the next day with 200 and bites and severe brain damage. When trial time came the four white men involved concluded that they acted in self-defense and Billy was the aggresor. The jury of 11 white and one black concluded that this wasn't a hate crime so light sentences were gievn. The one that threw the punch served 60 days in prison, the other three served 30 days. Eventually years down the line Billy was awarded 9 million dollars for pain and suffering but was this too late? How come these type of things keep happening? Is the legal system really unfair to black people? How come there wasn't more black people on the jury? Would more black jurors help or make things worse?

To me the legal system is real unfair when it comes to black people. I'm from Rockford,Il and recently there have been 2 shootings both involving a white police officer and 2 black males. The first shooting that occured the officer was suspended for 30 days without pay and now they are doing the same. Why is the legal system so backwards?
