Technology in Instruction and Parents

Technology in Instruction and Parents
Posted By: Nancy Johnson Cline on September 20, 2007

Teachers, here is some information you might share with your parents regarding technology in the classroom.

Use this in the newsletter that you share with your parents. Feel free to copy and paste.

It is not enough any more for students to just take a computer class and learn the basics about how to use a mouse, print, and turn off the computer. Tiny hands need to experience computers and technology in their learning. As a parent, you can be an integral part in making sure that your child's school has what it needs so that your child is prepared for a world that is technology supported and interminable.

Here are a few tips:

1. Join the PTA and be an advocate for the use of technology in the school. Assist in finding funding for computers, mobile laptop labs, wireless internet connection, interactive whiteboards and more. Sit on committees and teams that write grants and letters requesting funding.
2. Volunteer during your day off or take a day to watch a teacher's class while he/she is trained on how to use new technology equipment.
3. Attend school board meetings and express your desire for the schools to be technologically advanced and for all teachers to have training needed to prepare students for the future.
4.

Donate your old computer to the school or ask your company if they will donate laptops, desktops, or funding for the schools to have the technology it needs.
5. Ask the principal about the technology plan for the school and how you can assist in making the plan happen in your child's school.
6. Use the internet to find grants and free resources for your child's school. Here are a few to help get you started.
1. FundsNet Services
2. Technology Grant News http://www.technologygrantnews.com/grant-i...
3. Edutopia
4. The Funding Factory for Parents http://www.schoolgrants.org/Links/parents....

Your role in your child's education is vital. However, it does not end with attending parent/teacher conferences and signing report cards. Your voice must be heard and your time must be spent effecting change and implementing programs that will directly impact your child's educational outcomes. Those outcomes in the 21st Century should include the use of technology.

By the way, here is a link to an article regarding parental involvement in schools. Building Support for Better Schools http://www.sedl.org/pubs/family27/3.html

Feel free to make additional suggestions of how parents can impact the use of technology to enhance student learning in the comment section.
