this is the last chapter
|
Posted By: Michelle Cothran on November 19, 2007 I'm a senior in HS, and Nov. 10 was not only my birthday, but my last marching band competition. The book I am going to mention in a second, refers to our season, and for the seniors, "The Final Season." We were told as a band, to close the book, finish it-we were asked, "What will your last chapter be?" Well, its easy to have simple answers such as...to do our best, to have the greatest show, and maybe even take the gold tonight-but that wasn't what I wanted someone to read if my past four years in band was told as a story.... This is my last chapter: Everything in life comes to this inevitable point of ceasing to be. This is more simply known as 'The End' and a majority of the population is afraid of it. But you should never fear the end of something so great. What is there to be afraid of? You're not going to lose the feeling of exhaustion. You're not going to lose the feeling of wanting to go home before practice has even started. You're not going to lose the feeling of having these 200 or so people as your family members. You're not going to lose the feeling of being a part of something that's bigger than any of us ever will be. You're not going to lose the feeling of being able to believe in something. You're not going to lose the feeling of giving something your all. And you're certainly not going to lose the feeling of accomplishment when you think about all the great things you've done these past four years, so why worry? There's this feeling you get when you finally wake up on that last day. It's a realization that you've worked so hard to get to this point, and within a matter of hours, this will all be over. This thought is extremely overwhelming and can make even the toughest grown man cry. So how exactly are you supposed to feel on a day like this, and how does that compare to how you actually do? Are you supposed to feel relieved or sad? Content or disappointed? Do you wish you had even a few more minutes to make it better, or do you know for a fact you gave it your all every single time? It's these thoughts that fill our minds when someone asks what will be considered the best portion of your high school life as it came to a close? In the last couple hours of your show's life, you think about how this experience has changed you and how much you've grown in merely a few months. This isn't something you can just describe to people; it's an unexplainable phenomenon that needs to be felt. No matter how much they argue your parents will never understand this feeling nor will your staff. At this very point in time, they may feel the same type of emotions you do, but their approached to this is so different. You've experienced this in such a way, that it is incomparable. I can guarantee you that you feel: content, proud, disappointed, sad, and an overwhelmingly accomplished. Whether you walk on a field once or twice on your last day, one thing can be said about it. When you step off that field, make sure you've left everything you have. Let your passion lead you. Throw your heart over the bar. Reach for it and take it. Leave your colors on the field. Leave your legacy. Make them remember you. Make them remember the emotion you've put into every step and every note. Step off that field knowing that you've had the best show of your life and be proud of that. You'll never get this moment again, so take every second to show them who you are, where you came from, and what you're capable of. Regardless of silly numbers, it's all of these things that will give you the courage to say that this is the end, but the spirit to say that this is only the beginning.
