Persistent TSU finally gets its upset: Illinois
Tigers' three other big-name games were close losses

Tennessean Staff Reports

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The fourth major test was a charm for the Tennessee State men's basketball team Sunday.

After suffering close losses to major powers Georgia Tech, Indiana and Vanderbilt earlier in the season, the Tigers scored their biggest win of the season with a 60-58 upset victory over Big Ten foe Illinois before a stunned Assembly Hall crowd of 16,618.

TSU Coach Cy Alexander said the Tigers' close calls against other major college powers this season helped them finally pull off a big upset.

"I just think the kids are beginning to believe in what we're doing," Alexander said. "And they know how close we were against Georgia Tech. They know how close we were against Indiana. They know how close we were against Vanderbilt.

"Tonight we just finished it. We made some plays. We withstood their run. We were very poised.

Our defense and our defensive game plan was right on point."

TSU (4-7) had lost six of its previous seven games.

The Tigers had lost at home to Georgia Tech 99-85 Nov. 11, at Indiana 84-72 on Dec. 3, and at then-No. 17 Vanderbilt 83-74 Dec. 22. TSU led Vandy 55-47 in the second half and trailed only 73-70 with 2:43 left to play.

But TSU took it to Illinois (8-5) and never looked back.

"There's no question about it that having been there before made a big difference," Alexander said. "We've played with all of these teams. We haven't gotten blown out by anybody all year. This is a great win for our program as we try to move the program forward."

Bruce Price led TSU with 17 points and Jerrell Houston added 12. Trent Meacham led Illinois with a game-high 24.

The Tigers led 29-24 at halftime and increased that lead to 14 at 47-33 with 13:30 left on a 3-pointer by Price. Illinois finally cut it to a point at 59-58 with 1:08 remaining on a Meacham 3-pointer.

Illinois' Shaun Pruitt missed two free-throw attempts with 9 seconds left and Houston got the rebound and was fouled. He hit one of two foul shots for the final margin. Mike Tisdale missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Illinois.
