Black People Don’t Read
Current mood: thinking
Category: thinking Life

"Is it true that if you want to find out how ignorant a black man is, all you have to do is give him a book to read? Why? And I quote, "BLACK PEOPLE DON'T READ!" When I say book, I'm not talking about the Source, XXL, and all the other hip hop magazines. Yet books relating to "history" in general. Or even the local newspaper to find out what's going on in the community. It seems as if many black Americans don't take the time to get to know where they come from, or why they are the way they are. All they know is "I'm from Brooklyn son, or Jaw-ja (GA) shawty." Or they may even say some junk like, "my people were slaves. Or I'm a product of slavery." Well hell people, Jews were slaves as well. As a matter a fact, they were perhaps the first slaves and were in slavery just as long or even longer than "Black People." Yet look at the Jewish community today. They are not only rich. They are also smart. And they don't have the "slavery mentality" that us black people have."

"Doesn't it seem as if in order to get a black person to read, the title must be catchy? Or you may even have to send your friends a personal email requesting them to read your blog(s), even though they view your profile everytime they log on to your myspace, or facebook page, etc. "

"If you're black, then it's cool to be dumb. You're the man if you're 21 years old yet reading on a 3rd grade level.

What makes you cool, that you sag your pants, pimpin these he's, riding on 22's (rims), yet you can't pay your rent. But you're still my nigga. Yet if you're black, making good grades, and/or have your Master's Degree in Astronomy, then you think you're better than me (the uneducationed brother). You've been hanging around Billy too long because you're beginning to talk like him."

I already know this blog is going to offend some people. And I probably sound a little Bill Cosby or Clarence Thomasish to many of you. However, like those brothers, I'm qualitified to say this, because we're (black people) are smarter than what we've been told about ourselves. And we can do so much better than protest everytime some one calls us a "nigger", etc. Notice only black Americans do that. Black people in other countries don't act like this. Only in America. Also, only the people whom are of any community have the right to speak regarding its issue(s), because they have, or should have the first hand information.

Consequently, I want whomever reading this to know that this is not 100% of my feelings. Notice quotations around many of the statements. Yet the statements have a valid point. And I'm for sure that many of you feel the same way about other issues concerning black people, yet are afraid to say it because of the persecution you might face, or some myspace threat. But hell, persecution is nothing know to me. For gosh sakes, I'm an educated black man in America and I'm a Messianic Jew. The persecuation is double.

Now what!!!

Not enough black people read. And those that do read, don't read to their children. As a teacher, I see the results of this travisty daily. As a parent, I see the opposite result. I have been reading to my daughter, since she was born. And do you know that she loves to read. she loves to be read to and she actively searches for new words to spell and learn. Reading is fundamental and education is the true equalizer in America and the world. Balck America has forgotten it's rich history. Slaves were more driven than some of our people today.
