Breaking into Professional Speaking

Those who hire professional speakers are looking for experts who speak. As an expert who speaks, you want to identify the entry points and gatekeepers of the professional speaking industry. Through my professional experience in training and development, that includes being a past president of the award-winning Pikes Peak Chapter of ASTD, I had the opportunity to interface with those who have strong influence in the *business* of professional speaking. One of the gatekeepers of the professional speaking industry is the National Speakers Association (nsaspeaker.org). Savvy use of membership in this organization can put you in the sight of those in the meeting planning industry. Meeting planners are the ones who book speakers for large conferences, conventions, and other business venues. This is an entry point to professional speaking. Whether you join the NSA will be your call, but you would be remiss not to investigate it by finding your local chapter, attending some of their meetings, and getting on their mailing list.
