MY COLLEGE PLANS SEEM RUINED!

MY COLLEGE PLANS SEEM RUINED!
Posted By: Ru A. on June 06, 2005

OK, SO I FINALLY GOT ACCEPTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS AND THELAST THING THE SCHOOL NEEDS FROM ME IS FOR MY MOM TO SIGN MY FINANCIAL AID PAPERS. THE GOV SAYS THAT SHE "HAS TO" SIGN THEM, NO MATTER WHAT AND THAT I CAN'T DO IT ON MY OWN UNTIL I TURN 24. GUESS WHAT? MY MOM WON'T SIGN THE PAPERS SO SHE SAYS I WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTILI AM 24 TO FINISH COLLEGE. EVEN IF I SAVE MY OWN MONEY FROM WORKING, I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD A WHOLE YEARS WORTH OF COLLEGE ($16,000).

THE THING THAT GETS ME IS THAT MY MOM WILL BE GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE THIS JUNE AND SHE DOESN'T WORK SO FINANCIAL AID WILL GIVE ME MOST OF THE MONEY. SHE SAW ME WRITING THE 10 PAGE ESSAY TO GET IN AND SHE SAW HOW EXCITED I WAS WHEN I WAS ACCEPTED AND SHE JUST NOW TELLS ME SHE WON'T SIGN THE PAPERS AND WON'T TELL ME WHY...I WAS THINKING OF A FEW OPTIONS LIKE GOING TO THE AIR FORCE BUT MY RIGHT HAND IS INJURED SO I HAVE TO WAIT LIKE A YEAR TO GO. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO EXCEPT KEEP WORKING AND WAIT TILL I'M 24. IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS OR KNOWS SOMETHING I DON'T KNOW PLEASE FILL ME IN!!! SORRY THIS BLOG IS SO LONG BUT DAMN!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but you are COMPLETELY screwed. You can't go into the Air Force either without your parents' help. They also have financial aid as well. That's the only way you can get paid by the government, because they have to know what your mom makes in order to accomadate you.

Damn...that's so messed up. You need to sit her down and let her know that this is REALLY important to you. Wow...that really sux. Good luck with that...really....

All I can suggest is the talk with Mom. Off top I can't think of anything except that and prayer. I will pray that things do work out for you. In the meantime why not do community college with core classes. That way if you do happen to have to work until you get the money, you'll have some classes out the way and can come in as a Sophomore instead of a Frosh, assuming you are going in as a Frosh. Things will work out in some form, just stay thinking positive!

The only thing that you really can do is divorce your mom and become an independent.. When my mom gave over her custody, so that I could go to high school in another state, I became a ward of the state at 18.. Making me legally independent.. Which meant that I don’t need my mother to sign for anything, and depending on your college all you need is proof of independence.. That's all I needed for Xavier.. It’s a drastic avenue to take because your mother would no longer be responsible for you (in any way) only if she wants too.. But if you are really passionate about going to school you have to look at all of your options and weigh out the best for you. . Good luck to you.

Baby Girl...Sorry this is happening to you. But everything happens in a life for a reason. I don't know what u can do legally to get some things changed around, but I know you ca pray and I will be praying for you. I know this is a tight situation....don't know why it is happening the way it is happening, but one day it will work out. Just stay strong and don't get discouraged. You will figure out something, God Bless!

Can you file your financial aid as an independent student? Meaning your mother or father cannot claim you as a dependent. Or, can you just submit the financial aid app. and say you do not know your mother's income. When I was in undergrad. I did not know my father's income and I was able to still get aid without his information.

All things work together for the good. Your plans are not messed up and i believe that you still may have a chance to go to school. I did not have my parents information although my circumstance may be a lil differnt from yours. I moved out when i was 18 after graduating and have lost contact with my mother so therefore to apply for financial aid i had to write a letter to FAFSA stating that i dont live with my parents, dont have contact and am on my own so i should be considered for F.A. under the "independent student" stipulations, i will soon find out this week if it worked, but she didnt have to fill it out the two previous years i applied either so there is always a way. let me know if you need any further help.
