Evelyn Mercado Johnson is a bilingual American of Puerto Rican and French Heritage born and raised in New York City. She is married to Arthur Louis Johnson. They have three sons, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Evelyn worked as an early childhood educator. She is an Associate Pastor to Rev. Andre’ P. Jefferson, Sr., at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hampton, Virginia, where she is affectionately known as Rev.EJ. She was a member of the Senior and Gospel Choirs; served as secretary for the Commission on Christian Education, The Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Ministerial Staff. Additionally, Evelyn served in the Outreach Ministry to Senior Citizens. Evelyn earned a BA from Hampton University, a Master of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary, and is currently a doctoral student at Regent University’s School of Divinity with a concentration on Community Transformation. Her dissertation centers on a ministry to Hispanic/Latino(a) adults beginning with English as a second language, leading up to a Spanish Bible Study. Evelyn is the author of Pleas, Praises and Promises: A Personal Devotional Guide to 36 Two-liner Psalms for People on the Go! The onset of this battle ax of a book was while away at Payne, being a caregiver to her husband, student pastoring and struggling with osteoarthritis and high blood pressure. Rev. EJ's favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” [NRSV]. On November 2013 and January 2014, Evelyn had two total knee replacements. With a new pep in her step, she dances her praises to God.
