About the Program:
The SMA program is designed to combat the shortage of highly qualified science and mathematics teachers in urban high-need areas. Howard University will train and certify 30 graduate students (10 per year) to become teachers in the Prince George's County Public School (PGCPS) system by the program's completion. Students will receive a $10,000 stipend toward pursuing and completing a Master of Arts Teaching (M.A.T.) degree and full certification-initial licensure. While completing their degree, students will work full-time for two years in PGCPS. Eligibility Requirements: - Must be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident alien - Must have completed a Bachelor's degree in science, mathematics or engineering by May 2006, or May 2007 - Must take and pass all parts of Praxis I and II. Candidates who commit to this highly competitive Science and Mathematics program must have a GPA of 3.0 or above in a science or mathematics discipline, computer proficiency, motivation to work in an urban environment with a diverse student population, and a willingness to commit to excellence in teaching and learning. All applications for the Summer 2006 through Fall 2007 program must be received by May 30, 2006.
