The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), in conjunction
with Chevrolet, is kicking off the third year of Discover the Unexpected (DTU) scholarship and journalism fellowship for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The 2018 DTU program provides six HBCU students an opportunity to travel across several states discovering and reporting inspirational, and positive stories. The DTU Fellows will: each receive a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 stipend have access to a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox for their reporting assignments work alongside experienced NNPA staff at The Washington Informer, The Atlanta Voice, The Norfolk Journal & Guide, and The New York Amsterdam News in four-week intervals receive regular mentoring from the DTU Road Trip Navigator Dana Blair, an on-air correspondent, branding expert, and entertainment producer ( www.justdanablair.com ) This is the first year the program is open to all 106 HBCU. In 2016, DTU fellowships were offered to students attending Howard University. Last year, the program expanded to include Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. To date, Chevroletfs DTU scholarship awards along with stipends total more than $300,000. WHEN: Applications will only be accepted online via the programfs website at www.nnpa.org/dtu beginning April 2, 2018. The deadline is April 30, 2018. The selected Fellows will be contacted via email on or about May 4, 2018. HOW: Any student who is at least 18 years of age, attending an HBCU in their Sophomore-Senior year and majoring in journalism or mass communication is encouraged to apply for the 2018 DTU Fellowship. Students must submit the following information: A completed online application including their social media handles Upload a 90-second video telling us about themselves and why they deserve to be a DTU Fellow Upload a resume with GPA A link to their mixed-media portfolio that includes one or more of the following: o Writing (published or unpublished) relevant to journalism.
