Our application reopens on March 1, 2024, and closes at end of day on July 15, 2024. In 2023, we awarded twenty-five (25) $5,000 scholarships to undergraduate students committed to advancing health and social justice in twenty states, ten of whom are students attending HBCUs. We will be awarding an additional twenty-five (25) $5,000 scholarships again this year, and possibly more.
Dedicated to continuing the legacy of AIDS educator and health and social justice activist Pedro Zamora, the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship supports the undergraduate academic pursuits of young activists working in their communities who carry Pedro’s torch forward in pursuit of a bold vision that never again will a community be harmed because of fear, silence, discrimination, stigma, or hate. Using the HIV/AIDS activism movement as an example, the scholarship supports students taking up social justice work in its many forms and whose activism and work is inspired by their own passions, insights, originality, and conviction. When the National AIDS Memorial launched the program in 2009, its focus was on selecting scholars who were pursuing careers and community work around HIV/AIDS. Today, the program has evolved to support young students who are actively engaged in health and social justice issues in a variety of ways. This includes, but is not limited to: - HIV/AIDS research, prevention, treatment, access and activism - LGBTQ+ equality and rights - Health and health justice - Reproductive health - Serving in peer education, prevention, and community resource programs - Racial and social justice - Immigrant rights - Drug policy and drug sentencing reform - Employment and economic justice issues - Housing and homelessness - Technology innovation that supports justice work - Environmental justice The scholarship is open to current or incoming undergraduate students (ages 27 and younger) enrolled in a U.S. community college or four-year university. Proof of acceptance or current enrollment is required. The academic, extracurricular, and/or career pursuits of scholars must be consistent with the goals of the scholarship program, including demonstrating an active commitment to community justice work, public service and other leadership roles. Since 2009, more than $600,000 has been provided in financial support to 154 scholars through the generous support of many partners, including Presenting Partner, Gilead Sciences. | |
